Surrounded by silver boom relics, ghost towns, backcountry trails and spectacular scenery, Montezuma, at 10,400 feet above sea level, is a favorite jumping-off point for jeeping, camping, hiking, biking, fishing, and many other backcountry experiences.
In 1863, Summit County's original silver strike occurred near this area, and the town of Montezuma was born. It eventually grew to a population of 800. Today it serves as a reminder of an era gone by, yet still holds a special charm. Many visitors frequent this area during summer and winter to enjoy its pristine beauty, history and ghost town relics.
Some of the various activities to enjoy include:
Alpine Adventures, Inc., a Colorado Original, has been bringing the great "Colorado Outdoors" to visitors and residents for over 20 years.
In winter, ride a horse-drawn sleigh -- bundled up in elk robes -- over packed trails that bustled 100 years ago with miners hauling silver from famed mines like Silver King, Argentine and Sts. John. The entire region is dotted with old mines and ghost towns where dreams began and ended.
Smell the fresh mountain air of the Colorado Rockies as you ride through towering snow-covered pines. Enjoy nature's finest, most secret moments, away from the noise of the city and pressures of work. An 18-passenger sleigh, pulled by mighty draft horses, glides over the river and through the woods, past breathtaking beauty.
Join us for a hearty Western dinner that is served family-style in heated tents set up like a miner's camp, hidden deep in the snow. Savor Granny's famous homemade cookin'.
Historic day rides are also available
Enjoy spectacular summer views at the top of the world and challenge your senses with an adventure on horseback to the summit of America's most scenic mountains.
A table with a view? You've got it when you dine at 10,500 feet with only the sky overhead. Treat yourself to owner Donna Hellyer's famour vittles. St. Louis Post-Dispatch travel writer Barbara Gibbs Ostman raved about her cooking. "She conjures up some of the best sourdough pancakes this writer has ever eaten." Donna uses a special start that is over 100 years old. Talk about history!
